More nurses struck off, says UKCC

There has been a rise in the number of nurses struck off and disciplined,
the first annual report of the UKCC has revealed.

There has also been an increase in the number of rejections of applicants
seeking readmission to the medical register.

During 1999-2000 there were 1,142 complaints, compared with 1,077 the
previous year and fewer than 900 in 1996-97. About half of the complaints came
from employers, with the rest divided equally between the public and the
police.

The upward trend has continued into this year, with more than 600 complaints
in the first six months of 2000, compared with just over 500 for the same
period in 1999.
