Independent pub operator Punch Retail has appointed Joyce Woodrow as its new
HR director. Punch Retail has more than 1,000 licensed premises throughout the
country, ranging from community locals to fashionable nightclubs.

In her new position she will be responsible for driving the company’s
recruitment, training and personnel programmes.

"We have a broad spectrum of people, ranging from pub managers and bar
staff to head office personnel. A key part of my role is to ensure that Punch
attracts and retains the very best people through imaginative and effective
training, incentive and bonus scheme programmes," explains Woodrow.

She began her career as a graduate trainee at Whitbread before moving to
Scottish & Newcastle as HR manager. In her last role, as HR director at
Ladbrokes, she was responsible for developing and implementing an HR strategy
throughout the company from retail outlets to head office.

At Punch Retail, Woodrow hopes to create a training and development and
reward programme that wins recognition in the industry. "Punch Retail has
a hard work culture, but the rewards are there for those who succeed and we are
committed to providing the best tools to help individuals exceed their
goals," she says.

Woodrow is looking forward to the flotation plans for the business.

On the move…

Pat Shaw joins Bristol law firm TLT Solicitors as HR manager. She has
previously worked at Clifford Chance and Baker and McKenzie, and has been a
member of HR In Law for around 15 years, recently serving as deputy chairwoman.
Shaw says, "TLT’s key brand values are pragmatic, responsive, accessible
and service orientated, and we need to make sure there are a little of these in
everyone."

David Ballard is to take over as director general of the British Safety
Council when Sir Neville Purvis retires next month. Ballard is a civil engineer
and a lawyer, and has spent all his working life in construction and related
industries. He is chief executive of the Glass and Glazing Federation and a
Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He says, "With the
advent of electronic communication, the British Safety Council can access a
wider audience and intends to use that advantage."

& Guilds. Her task is to deliver a strategy to meet the needs of business
