Unite union imposes levy on members to fund BA strikers

Unite the union is to is to impose a compulsory levy on its members, to support striking British Airways cabin crew.

The union plans to raise £700,000 from its members by imposing a 2% levy on subs in April, May and June, the Guardian has reported.

The union’s general executive approved the decision yesterday. Joint general secretary Tony Woodley said: “This is an unprecedented move and it shows Unite is absolutely determined to give our members all the support they deserve in winning this battle.”

He added: “We continue to search for a decent settlement in this dispute, but cabin crew are not going to be driven back to work for lack of resources.”

Unite is paying the strikers £30 a day.
