The
Science Recruitment Group has blamed the poor quality of science teaching in
schools and employers’ low commitment to training for the skills gap in the UK.
"The
quality of staff is available in the UK but Pfizer is experiencing difficulties
in recruiting experienced chemists," said Dr Martin Ferber, executive
director of Human Resources for Pfizer, speaking at the SRG roundtable
discussion in London yesterday.
Ferber
does not believe it is the responsibility of companies to plough more money
into science education.
"Investment
in science education should come from the government, not industry," he
said.
