Burberry checks out with plans to close Welsh clothing plant

Fashion house Burberry is planning to close its clothing plant in Rhondda, Wales, with the loss of 300 jobs, despite making great strides on the sales front.

The company, which boasts Croydon-born Kate Moss and Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd among its models, is consulting with staff at the site.

The GMB union, which represents workers, said it would campaign to keep the factory open and plans to target celebrities who wear Burberry to highlight the issue. Burberry, whose famous check pattern is now synonymous with ‘chav’ culture, plans to move the plant’s production overseas. Last week, Burberry announced a23% rise in sales for the first half of 2006.
