Johnny Depp fans south of the river Thames will be considering walking the plank at the news that staff at Brixton’s Ritzy cinema are jumping ship this Friday (1 June) – in a dispute over pay – to coincide with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
Members of broadcasting union Bectu at the cinema are currently on the nowhere-near-a-king’s-ransom national minimum wage of £5.35 per hour. They voted unanimously to take action after rejecting City Screen’s offer of £5.41 per hour (or £5.50 without a sales bonus).
Local Bectu representative Jackie Brett-Holt said: “It is unacceptable for a company as large as City Screen to take advantage of its workers by enforcing a wage well below the recognised London poverty line.”
