CIPD chief executive Jackie Orme faces target of 20,000 new members in next two years

One of the first big challenges for Jackie Orme as CIPD chief executive will be to lead a drive to boost membership by 15% over the next two years.

Plans disclosed in the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s annual report revealed that it has set a target of 150,000 members by 2010, with a “substantial” increase in those with chartered status.

Chartered members have to demonstrate three years’ relevant experience at management level, two of which must be in a specific personnel or development role. The CIPD currently has about 130,000 members – 48,000 of whom are chartered.

Plans also include improving relationships with large employers and exploring international opportunities.

The report revealed that Orme will be taking over a financially sound organisation next April, when she replaces retiring director-general Geoff Armstrong.

Income for 2006-07 was £35.2m, up £1m on 2005-06. After deducting a pension liability of £2.1m, the CIPD had a total of £29.3m in reserve to cover operating costs. Armstrong was paid £343,000 last year, and Orme can expect a similar deal.
