Up to 30 British Gas workers have been suspended after allegations that they had tampered with their own bills, the Press Association has reported.
Staff at the firm’s Leicester-based call centre await the results of a misconduct inquiry after they were caught allegedly cutting their own gas and electricity bills.
The employees, who work in the business operations unit, did not have full access to customers’ accounts, British Gas said.
About 1,200 staff are based at the call centre where the allegations were made.

A spokesman for the company said: “British Gas confirmed that a small number of staff members have been suspended following alleged misconduct.
“It would be inappropriate to comment any further whilst investigations are ongoing.”
