HR is playing a more central role at the West Bromwich Building Society
after the company introduced a new approach to performance measurement.
Paul Turner, general manager of people development at the building society said
the company had adopted a balanced scorecard approach to measure and manage its
performance after successfully piloting the scheme in its IT department.
It helped reduce staff turnover in the department from 23 per cent to zero
and absenteeism by 50 per cent, while helping to boost performance.

Speaking last week at the IIR performance management techniques conference,
Turner said introducing the scorecard had promoted HR to a central business
development role.
"We always talk about having a people position at the top table and
this helped us move towards that," he said.
