Business studies tops university degree choice list again

One in eight undergraduates is choosing business studies, making it the UK’s most popular degree subject.

Equal second in a list, which was compiled by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, are social studies and biological studies, both taken up by 9.2% of students.

The figures – based on university entry in 2003 – also reveal that the highest number of overseas students in the UK – 47,700 in 2003 – come from China.

The figures all refer to the number of students taking a first undergraduate degree. Of these, the proportion doing business studies actually fell from 13.5% in 2002, when it also topped the list.

Top five subjects

  • Business 12.5%
  • Biological studies 9.2%
  • Social studies 9.2%
  • Creative arts and design 8.8%
  • Medicine-related subjects 8.6%.
