Calls to replace ‘unsustainable’ DTI strengthen

A new Department for Infrastructure should be created by the next prime minister to promote economic growth, employers’ groups have urged.

The EEF manufacturers organisation said the department should have a remit to take a strategic approach to energy, transport and planning issues.

The EEF said that the current system was “unsustainable” as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) had overlapping responsibilities for promoting economic growth.

Martin Temple, EEF director-general, said: “There is now a persuasive case to put in place a single economic department with the responsibility of promoting economic competitiveness.”
