At least 17 per cent of smokers were planning to give up this new year,
according to research by Quit.
The charity launched its helpline to encourage the 8.5 million smokers who
it says would like to give up smoking but need advice and support in order to
do so.

It claims that only 3 per cent of those who try to quit through willpower
alone actually succeed and offers an action plan and a range of support
materials for healthcare professionals to help smokers who want to give up. The
