A leadership and team-building exercise assisted in the execution of a major police initiative, when a northern force sent senior officers and civilian support staff out on the beat.
North Yorkshire Police got extra value from the ‘development day’ as the 40 managers and senior officers made six arrests while on patrol in York.
The initiative was planned as a one day event to improve performance by encouraging leadership and getting the whole force working as a team.
However, real policing activities were used during the day, with staff getting actively involved and making arrests for burglary, theft, drugs offences and anti-social behaviour.
Assistant chief constable Peter Bagshaw, who is normally third in command of the force, made the 2,000th arrest of ‘Operation Delivery’, a tough policing campaign targeting local criminals.
Paul Ackerley, head of staff development at North Yorkshire Police, said the scheme had enhanced the teamworking and skills across the whole service.
"The day’s activities engendered a really cohesive approach to achieving the force’s goals. The challenge now is to maintain this impetus by providing further innovative training solutions that continue to increase performance," he said.

The day included high visibility patrols around some of the cities car parks, policing the major shopping areas, offering crime prevention advice to the public and targeting problem areas for anti-social behaviour.
