The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has appointed Chris Last, the human resources director of car giant Ford, as its next director-general of HR.
Chris Last will replace the long-standing Kevin White, who has moved on to become director-general of HR at the Home Office.
Last is currently HR director for Ford of Europe and the Premier Automotive Group, and will take up post on 2 January 2008.
He joined the Ford Motor Company in 1979 as a graduate trainee. In his most recent role he had responsibility for corporate HR for Ford Motor Company operations in Europe.
His appointment followed an open competition and was approved by prime minister Gordon Brown.
DWP permanent secretary Leigh Lewis said: “Last is taking on the crucial role of leading the DWP’s HR strategy during a period of significant challenge and transition for the department.
