Several employment law changes come into force today, 1 October.

These include:
- an increase in the National Minimum Wage (NMW) to £5.80 per hour. For a detailed guide on the NMW visit XpertHR.
- a ban on employers using tips to top up the NMW of staff
- an increase to the maximum weekly amount for calculating unfair dismissal and redundancy payments, from £350 to £380. For a list of frequently asked questions on statutory redundancy payments visit XpertHR.
- a workplace parking levy, where employers will have to pay for their staff parking, with the option to pass the charges to employees. This will be launched as a pilot scheme in Nottingham, although implementation of the law does not occur until 2012.
