The Equal Opportunities Commission has called for more parental rights for
fathers after the Government announced it would extend unpaid maternity leave
for mothers.
Women will be entitled to a year’s maternity leave under new measures
unveiled last week by the DTI. Unpaid maternity leave will be extended by three
months to a year.
Julie Mellor, chair of the EOC, urged the DTI to consider extending
paternity leave rights.
She said, "The Government has an opportunity to widen access to
flexible working practices and give fathers, as well as mothers, more choices
about how they combine responsibilities at home and at work."
