Government is top job for university students

Working
for the government or the public services are the most popular career choices
for students, research finds.

The
Universum Awards 2002, by Universum Communication, asked 6,000 students in 44
universities to pick their top three sectors to work in.

Almost
a fifth of respondents want to work in government and the public services,
followed on 17 per cent by management consultancy, public relations and
academic research. In all, 12 per cent of students opt for advertising, while
more than a tenth want to work in investment banking and the healthcare or
pharmaceutical industries.

The
BBC is by far the most popular company to work for, with over a fifth of
students identifying the broadcaster among their five favourite companies to
work for. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office came second on 12 per cent with
British Airways third on 11 per cent.

Pharmaceutical
giants GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca are both in the top 10 at six and nine
respectively.
