Guru – boozy CIPD to talk on perils of drink

Guru was amused last week to hear the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) talking about the need for human resources (HR) professionals to play their part in reducing employee alcohol abuse.

A very sound message, Guru thought as he poured himself another glass of red, but with somewhat suspect timing.

Ben Willmott, CIPD employee relations adviser, must still have been ‘high on life’ from the Harrogate conference if he thought that HR professionals were in a position to talk about alcohol abuse after that little shindig.

What Guru saw at Carrington’s nightclub in the picturesque Yorkshire town would rule most HR professionals out of even looking at booze for a few weeks, let alone talking self-righteously about it to other staff.

Next week from the CIPD: How Rail and Maritime Transport union general secretary Bob Crow should lecture staff on the merits of non-confrontational action why immigration minister Liam Byrne should hold seminars for Asian doctors thinking of coming to the UK and calls for Pete Doherty to teach school children about avoiding drugs.
