The Health and Safety Commission has targeted managers in higher and further education establishments and published a guide to looking after the health and safety of researchers.
John Cullen, chair of the education services advisory committee which published the guidance booklet, said, “Health and safety legislation is often seen by academics as bureaucratic and not appropriate for research activities. But health and safety legislation applies just as much to research work as any other work activity.
The risks are widespread, ranging from lone working and violence from clients during social studies to the those from chemicals, microorganisms and lasers.
