Height related accidents spark health and safety debate

by Personnel Today 8 Oct 2008
by Personnel Today 8 Oct 2008

A new influx of height related accidents have sparked a fresh debate concerning health and safety in the workplace.

Incidents often caused by incomplete scaffolding and ladders, have been on the rise in recent months due to negligence of basic health and safety training.

The debate has surfaced following the prosecution of a construction manager from Mansfield who was fined £1,500 for breaching various sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

One of the man’s employees’s had recently fallen 2 metres from an unprotected wall leaving him with permanent injuries including short term memory damage and loss of mobility to part of his hand.

When probing further, HSE inspectors also found several other sites putting workers at severe risk by not employing the necessary health and safety measures.

Two employees from one site were found at risk of falling from a loading bay as the protection in place was insufficient.

Not only this, but some sites even risk members of the public by ignoring fundamental safety guidelines.

According to staggering figures from the Health and Safety Executive, 45 workers died last year following a fall from height and 3750 were seriously injured.

In an aim to reduce this figure, Alliance Learning is offering a range of Health and Safety training courses specifically designed for all industry sectors across Bolton, Wigan, Bury and the wider Greater Manchester area.

Through dedication and experience, practitioners can guide and advise on how to tackle a number of risky and potentially dangerous situations that may occur in the workplace.

With courses ranging from Risk Assessment to Specialised Plant Training, you can rest assure that Alliance have the answer to your companies continual training schedule.
