HR professionals took part in a mock employment tribunal at a seminar last week in which speakers Thomas Kibling and Professor Alan Neal acted out the role of witnesses in a case.
Delegates at the day-long seminar in London cross-examined Kibling, an employment barrister, and Neal, professor of law at the Warwick University and part-time tribunal panel chairman.
Earlier, Kibling told delegates a common mistake was the failure to communicate with the appellant to see if the case could be resolved without a hearing. In one case it turned out the former employee merely wanted the return of a rubber plant.
“She had nurtured this plant for 12 years and she had not been able to retrieve it from her office. But no-one had actually asked her what she wanted. The plant was delivered to her home in a humidifier van.”
