The latest figures reveal that unemployment has continued to
fall, with the number of jobless down by 64,000 for the quarter ending March
2001.
Statistics from the office of national statistics show that
the number of unemployed in the UK was 1.5 million for the quarter, which was
down by 204,000 compared to a year earlier.
The figures indicate that employment rose by 100,000 over
the quarter, and by 268,000 over the year.
TUC secretary John Monks welcomed the drop in unemployment
figures.
He said, “With average earnings now on a downward track,
there is plenty of leeway for the Bank of England to cut interest rates again.”
