An extra bank holiday in 2002 to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee is being considered by the Government.
The proposed date is Monday 3 June. The spring bank holiday is likely to be moved to Tuesday 4 June, creating a four-day weekend.
But some employers are concerned that the long weekend does not coincide with the Whitsun half-term break, when manufacturing businesses traditionally close for a week. As a result of the additional bank holiday, factories could be closed for seven working days instead of five.
They propose that the half term is moved forward a week or that the May bank holiday remains on Monday 27 May and the extra bank holiday is moved to Friday 31 May.
