It is about time that people entering our country to work and live should be expected to speak English, to respect and embrace British culture, and should probably be expected to pass an exam in British citizenship (‘Lawyers slam pathetic changes to migrant laws’, Personnel Today, 21 November).
It is a shame we don’t take a leaf out of Australia’s book and tell immigrants that they are welcome to come if they agree to live as we live, peacefully alongside us.
I do not believe that the changes to the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme will cause massive problems for employers. But, for once, immigrants will not be able to walk into highly-paid professional jobs without having to jump through a few of our hoops first.
