Tractor deaths study
Lap straps on tractors would have prevented at least some of the 27 deaths in
the past 10 years among tractor drivers who were thrown from their cabs when
their tractors overturned, according to new research carried out for the HSE by
the Transport Research Laboratory. The research used computer modelling to
compare injuries suffered by drivers when using or not using a lap strap. The
effectiveness of lap straps as seat restraints on tractors in the event of
overturning, price £20, is available from HSE Books tel: 01787 881165, fax:

Safer docks call
The docks industry needs to reduce accidents and address modern working
methods, says shipping minister Keith Hill. Three people died and 709 were
injured as a result of dock work in 1999-2000. The Health and Safety Commission
is reviewing all the areas involved in health and safety in the docks industry.
