Embattled bank Northern Rock has announced the appointment of their new group HR director, who will begin in September.
Richard Smelt, currently group HR director at Carphone Warehouse, will join the bank on 15 September, taking over from Lynne Griffin.
Smelt has more than 20 years’ experience in people management, formerly HR director for Nomura (1998-2001), Signet Group (1996-1998), Comet Group (1991-1995) and HFC Banking and Insurance Group (1989-1991).
“The company is going through a major restructuring exercise and his considerable HR expertise will be invaluable as we move forward,” said Ron Sandler, executive chairman of Northern Rock. “[Smelt’s] appointment further strengthens our executive team and illustrates the level of importance we place on HR management within the company.”
