Cathy Scivier implements HR in an NHS trust
Working mum Cathy Scivier would love to have more time to spend with her
eight-year-old daughter. In May, she took up the new post of HR director at the
Institute of Cancer Research, joining from Kingston and District Community NHS
Trust, where she held a similar post. Her original career was in general
management, moving into HR in 1988.
Scivier’s brief is to develop and implement an HR strategy, as the function
is predominantly operational and head office-based. "I want to see us
integrating our activities with the scientific activities of the
institute," she explains.
Part of her remit is to review the institute’s reward strategy as well as
taking a more structured approach to training and development. Scivier says
that because the institute is competing with both industry and the charity
sector, she will also investigate recruitment and retention.
"I want to see the institute recognised as a good employer as well as
the place to be to practise leading-edge scientific study," she says.
