I read in horror the proposals of Trevor Phillips to urge the government to change equalities laws to increase areas of under-representation in certain professions (Personnel Today, 5 December).
Whatever happened to recruiting the best person for the job?
We have laws in place to ensure that everyone should have the same opportunities for employment, and we should be tackling those employers that discriminate rather than changing laws – which could cause a great deal of resentment.

I for one would hate to have been successful or unsuccessful in a job application due to the colour of my skin. I would prefer my skills and suitability for the job to be the deciding factors.
