Service-sector deals rising

• Figures showing settlements for manufacturing and service firms show the
latter continue to rise steadily.

The CBI’s Pay Data Bank survey found manufacturing pay settlements are the
lowest since 1980.

Sectors covered under private services are catering and leisure, financial
services, retailing and distribution, transport and communications,
business/professional services and construction.

Service company pay awards averaged 4 per cent in the three months to
December 1999, compared with 3.8 per cent to November and 4.4 per cent a year
ago. Manufacturing awards averaged 2 per cent in the three months to December,
2.3 per cent in the three months to November and 3 per cent a year ago.
