Organisations need to be much more systematic in the way they capture staff
knowledge.
This is the message from a CIPD report Managing Knowledge Workers: the HR
Dimension, which shows employers need to work harder at encouraging their
employees to share knowledge and ensure essential know-how isn’t lost when
workers leave.
The report advises on managing knowledge workers, highlighting the
importance of autonomy, challenging work and sharing in the creation of
organisational values.

It also looks at how firms have taken a more inclusive approach to knowledge
workers.
Diane Sinclair, CIPD adviser on employee relations, said the creation and
sharing of knowledge is a major source of competitive advantage.
"Companies can inadvertently encourage employees to keep knowledge to
themselves, but this knowledge is increasingly where critical values lie,"
she said.
