The UK’s two biggest unions for college and university academic staff have voted to merge. Natfhe and the Association of University Teachers (AUT) will form the University and College Union (UCU), representing more than 116,000 staff. A single union representing further and higher education staff will carry more weight in pay negotiations, it is claimed. UCU will represent UK teachers and lecturers, managers, researchers and academic-related staff such as librarians, administrators and IT professionals. The merger was supported by 79.2% of AUT members and 95.7% of Natfhe members who took part in the vote.
