The prospect of a strike by tens of thousands of local government employees over changes to their pensions came a step closer after union members backed a ballot.
Unison, the UK’s biggest public sector union, consulted 850,000 people after the Government proposed raising the pension age for council staff from 60 to 65.
The union said a majority of those consulted supported a full vote for industrial action. It will now decide whether to go ahead with the strike ballot.
