University admin and support staff settle pay dispute

University staff have accepted a 15.5% pay increase, ending a series of bitter stand-offs between higher education institutions and the academics and support staff they employ.

Staff including porters, cleaners and gardeners as well as catering and maintenance staff voted 94% in favour of the pay rise.

Chris Kaufman, T&G national secretary and chief negotiator for further and higher education staff, said the deal was a good move forward but the union would continue to fight “to eradicate poverty pay for our members in universities”.

Last month university academics accepted a new pay offer, bringing an end to a long-running dispute that resulted in lecturers boycotting exam and coursework marking.
