Migrant staff working as hotel cleaners paid less than half the minimum wage

Immigrant workers are being paid less than half the minimum wage to clean in some of London's 'top hotels', which cost guests up to £400 per night, according to a report in The Times.

Agencies providing labour to hotels claim to be paying an hourly rate, but instead they pay staff depending on the number of rooms they clean. According to the report, agencies set high targets to ensure a low wage for the workers.

An increasing number of agencies are also demanding that immigrants, desperate for work, are self-employed, so as to avoid paying the minimum wage.

In some cases, workers are being paid £100 for a 40-hour week.
