Tesco is injecting £3m into a training programme to develop future leaders, despite the current economic climate.
The figure is up 23% on 2008 and the supermarket giant said is it the largest investment in senior team development in the retail sector.
Over the next 12 months the money will be ploughed into developing senior managers and directors through the Tesco Academy, its internal centre for leadership development.
Peta Hay, director of the Tesco Academy, said: “Our investment in leadership development represents the largest investment of its kind in the retail sector.

“The Tesco Academy aims to develop leaders who have a vision that they can align the business behind and who live our values. This will ensure that, as the business continues to expand, our leaders have the capability to deliver the stretching targets set.”
A survey by the Institute of Directors, published during the summer, found that most employers are maintaining training budgets or even increasing them, despite the pressures resulting from the recession.
