Jaguar Land Rover announces UK plant closure

The jobs of thousands of Jaguar Land Rover workers were thrown into doubt yesterday when the firm announced plans to close a UK plant.

The axe will fall on either the Land Rover factory in Solihull, which employs 5,000 workers, or Jaguar’s base at Castle Bromwich, which employs 2,000, The Times reports.

JLR pledged to create 800 jobs on Merseyside when it releases a new Land Rover model next year.

Bosses insisted there would be no redundancies, according to The Sun.  The company said it would continue a review of its operations and make a decision on which facility will close by the middle of next year.

Bert Hill, regional officer of the GMB union, said: “The GMB will be opposing everything we have heard so far. We will fight the company.”
