MPs’ expenses deal – no receipts needed

MPs have implemented new expenses rules doubling the amount they can claim without receipts.

Under the new scheme, the Telegraph has discovered, MPs can claim a £25-a-night subsistence allowance when staying away from their designated main homes.

This allowance, which could add up to £9,000 a year, will be paid on top of expenses for mortgage interest, rates, council tax and utility bills, and comes despite public outrage at MPs’ spending.

The allowance, which is almost double the previous £4,800 a year limit for unreceipted claims, was not debated in public, but approved by a small committee chaired by John Bercow, the new Speaker of the House of Commons.
