Two London NHS trusts outsource supply and management of ‘bank’ staff

Two of London’s largest NHS trusts have signed a three-year, £45m deal for the supply of nursing and midwifery agency staff.

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) has contracted health recruitment firm Pulse to manage its flexible, or ‘bank’, staffing, while Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has awarded the firm a contract to cover its St Mary’s and Western Eye sites.

David Amos, director of workforce at UCLH, said: “We have been very impressed by Pulse’s approach, which has focused on ensuring that every nurse and midwife we book is thoroughly checked before they work in the NHS.”

Pulse chief executive Richard MacMillan said: “Flexible staff make an enormously valuable contribution to care in the NHS and we have made considerable investment in groundbreaking technology to make the process of booking temporary staff easier and to become an NHS staffing partner of choice,” he said.

The new service will be launched on 12 May.
