If, like me, you’ve never studied neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), this book will provide you with an introduction.
Its stated purpose is ‘to provide a practical guide to using NLP to achieve business excellence’, and the book does exactly that. Whether or not you think NLP can support you in achieving business excellence, you really have to judge for yourself.
NLP has its devotees and its critics – but what is it? According to the book, NLP refers to how our brain works, the way we use words, and how this affects our relationship with the external world. It also relates to the interactive process that allows us to make very precise choices about the way we think, speak and feel.
In the first few chapters, the author outlines the NLP techniques he believes to be particularly relevant to the business environment. In subsequent chapters, he describes how these techniques can be applied in various business situations, explaining what is happening when we communicate, and how knowledge of NLP can enable you to communicate more effectively.
The book is an easy reference manual – the information is set out clearly in short chapters, broken into even shorter sections – perfect to read and absorb while you’re commuting.
The limitations of NLP (which are highlighted in the book) are that in unskilled hands, some of the techniques may result in NLP being used negatively. In light of this, my feeling is that seeking some practical instruction to complement the book would be extremely beneficial.
