Faculty of Occupational Medicine honours Atwell

Cynthia Atwell, one of the leading lights in occupational health nursing, has had her contribution recognised by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM), which made her an honorary fellow in May.

This honour is bestowed on ‘persons of eminence who have rendered exceptional services to the science or practice of occupational medicine’.

The letter Atwell received from the president of the FOM, Dr David Snashall, referred to her leadership role in OH nursing, and the part she has played in ‘moving the agenda from safety to health’. Apart from many roles within nursing, including being chairwoman of the English National Board’s OH committee from 1990 to 1993, Atwell was also a member of the Health and Safety Commission from 1996 to 1998. She now runs the University of Warwick’s OH diploma course, which she set up five years ago.
