Labour conference faces call for return to secondary action

The managing director of Gate Gourmet has accused the T&G union of trying to win a change in employment law by using the summer’s wildcat strikes.

Interviewed in the Guardian, Eric Born, said the T&G was using fiction and myth to win support for a proposal to be put to the Labour party conference that would call on the government to reinstate the right to undertake secondary picketing and to make it easier for unions to hold strike ballots.

He said the union was trying to portray Gate Gourmet as an aggressive, union-busting company.

T&G general secretary, Tony Woodly, said the moves were about protecting vulnerable workers, but Born said any change would have a negative impact on the UK economy.

Talks to settle the dispute continue.
