Demand for graduate recruits has started to recover after the two-year downturn, and is set to increase even further in 2004-05.
The upturn in graduate vacancies is also expected to rise modestly too, according to a survey of 117 employers of new graduates by Personnel Today’s sister title IRS Employment Review.
Despite more than 210,000 people entering the graduate labour market each year, employers still encounter difficulties filling their vacancies. In 2002-03, just over three in 10 employers encountered recruitment difficulties. In this year’s survey, more than half of the same organisations (57 per cent) had problems recruiting graduates.

Online recruitment is the method used by most employers for this task, with more than three-quarters of recruiters (77 per cent) advertising vacancies on their own websites. More than four in 10 employers recruit students who have undertaken work experience placements at their organisation.
