IT sector must do more to address workplace inequality, say IT professionals

by Daniel Thomas 28 Oct 2010
by Daniel Thomas 28 Oct 2010

The IT sector still has work to do to address inequalities in the workforce, according to research from recruitment website CWJobs.co.uk.

In its survey of 5,556 IT professionals, just 55% said that there is a fair representation of women in the industry, while 64% feel that a better gender balance would be beneficial to the sector.

Highlighting a disparity in salary perception between the sexes, 63% of females think that they earn less than men, while just 28% of men believe this to be the case. Just 25% of 20- to 29-year-olds think that women earn less than men, while 33% of 30- to 39-year-olds believe this to be the case.

More than three-quarters (76%) of the IT professionals surveyed think that younger IT specialists are not as valuable to the industry as those with 10 years’ experience or more. However, 62% feel that there is a fair representation of people of different ages in IT.

Richard Nott, website director at CWJobs.co.uk, said: “There is evidently still work to be done on tackling inequality in the industry. Although progress is being made, the industry as a whole must take steps to ensure equality is nurtured and continues to grow.”
