Pregnant employee sues holiday firm for discrimination

A holiday company that prides itself on its superior childcare facilities is being sued for allegedly discriminating against a pregnant woman.

Deborah Aspland, a senior sales manager at Mark Warner Holidays, claims that she was effectively demoted when she told her boss that she was pregnant.

She will claim that the company also caused her undue stress during her pregnancy at an employment tribunal that begins today in London.

Mark Warner denies her claims, which it calls totally unfounded. It is one of Britain’s best-known holiday companies and promotes itself as being family-friendly.

On its website, it claims: “Over the last 15 years we’ve built up an enviable record for our amazing childcare.”

A spokesman for the company told the Times: “Mark Warner Limited denies all allegations that they have treated a pregnant employee less favourably and will defend their position at the hearing at the employment tribunal commencing 9 November.

“It is Mark Warner’s firm contention that the allegations raised against them are totally unfounded.”
