More
than 24,000 people from the eight Eastern European countries that recently
joined the European Union have signed up to the Government’s workers’ register.
The
Home Office published data showing the total number who signed up to the new
scheme throughout May and June.
The
figures showed that more than 14,000 of the total were already in the UK before
the EU expanded on 1 May.
A
separate set of figures shows a 20 per cent increase in the number of people
arriving from the eight former communist states year-on-year.

In
May, 99,000 arrivals were recorded by the Office for National Statistics – a
fifth more than in the same month of 2003.
