by Personnel Today 29 Jun 2004

Contract catering firm Catering Partnership has appointed Sue Slee as HR officer. Prior to joining, she travelled the world for a year and before that worked for Hays Logistics UK as an HR officer.

What will be your duties in your new role?

Monitoring sickness and absence, producing new policies and procedures as required to keep up with new legislation, and guiding managers on the implementation of these. Also, dealing with calls on our confidential employee helpline.

What do you hope to achieve?

To make the HR aspect of managing as pain free as possible for my colleagues.

Which aspects are you most looking forward to?

Learning how a different company functions with regards to HR and how I can improve it.

How will HR change over the next five years?

Lots more new legislation.

Who is your ultimate guru?

Steve Irwin, crocodile hunter – he has such enthusiasm for his job.

What is the strangest situation you have been in at work?

Being asked to answer these questions.

What is your essential viewing?

Any programmes on Australia and its dangerous wildlife.

What is the best thing about HR?

There is never a dull moment.

And the worst?

Too much new legislation.

How do you fill your spare time?

Kick boxing, scuba diving (only in hot countries), and snowboarding.

What is the greatest risk you have ever taken?

Climbing big rocks in Australia’s outback. It was risky because of the wildlife.

What’s the most over-rated tool in your job?

The all-singing, all-dancing database system that doesn’t do what I want it to.

What advice would you give to people starting out in HR?

Learn to love employment law.

What would be your ideal job?

A scuba diving instructor on the Great Barrier Reef.

Who would play you in the film of your life and why?

Lara Croft because she works hard and plays hard.

What is the best office party you’ve ever attended?

My own leaving party, as I knew I was going travelling and not working for a year.

Who would you most like to be stuck in a lift with?

Lee Evans. He would keep me laughing.
