Portsmouth Business School is leading the way in publishing student textbooks for human resource management programmes.
Three out of four of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) core textbooks are authored and edited by Business School academics Gary Rees, Dr Ray French, Dr Valerie Anderson and Professor David Farnham.
Director of postgraduate human resource management programmes, Gary Rees, said: “Portsmouth has been textbook writing for four decades starting with a seminal text by Laurie Mullins on management and organisational behaviour, which is still one of the leading management textbooks in the UK.
“We are constantly working with employers and professional bodies to ensure our courses provide the knowledge and skills that are relevant to industry. And for our CIPD recognised qualifications, this has resulted in us authoring three of the four core text books studied by our postgraduate diploma students.
“The CIPD trusts us to produce core texts because we have such well-known experts on human resource management at the Business School.”
The three textbooks are: Leading, Managing and Developing People edited by Gary Rees and Dr Ray French; Research Methods in Human Resource Management by Dr Valerie Anderson; and Human Resource Management in Context by Professor David Farnham.

Portsmouth offers a postgraduate diploma in HRM, a part-time programme designed for the needs of HR practitioners who want to consolidate their skills and knowledge with a professionally recognised qualification.
Once students have completed this they can progress on to the Master’s top-up which comprises a seven day block release programme followed by a dissertation.

For students who prefer to study full-time, there is also the MSc Human Resource Management, which combines the postgraduate diploma and the Master’s over a period of 13 months.
The postgraduate diploma provides students with the generalist grounding needed to operate as an HR professional, whilst the Master’s equips course members to operate effectively at a strategic HR level.
