Asda is to create 8,000 jobs through the opening of 18 new stores across the UK during 2007.
Andy Bond, Asda president and chief executive, said the supermarket chain would also extend and improve 15 of its existing stores and roll out its non-food format ‘Asda Living’ to an additional 10 sites within the next 12 months.
More than of 4,000 jobs will be created by the new store building programme, with a further 2,000 jobs created through Asda’s new ‘Seasonal Plus Scheme’, providing customers and colleagues with extra help during peak trading periods.

An additional 2,000 jobs will be created through organic growth.
Judith Mckenna, chief financial officer of Asda, said: “This is a major investment that will enable Asda to provide even better service and great value products to more people across the UK than ever before.
