Building worker dies at Heathrow’s Terminal 5

by dan thomas 5 Aug 2005

One worker has died and another was seriously injured while working at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 (T5) development on Wednesday afternoon.

They were involved in building a car park when a bolt failed on a cantilever slab. Both men were immediately taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. One of the workers, Mathew Gilbert, later died. The other worker is said to be in a stable condition.

No further details of the accident are available, although three Health & Safety Executive inspectors are on site investigating. Work was suspended in the immediate area where the accident happened, and the T5 site was closed yesterday as a mark of respect.

BAA takes pride in its ‘one-in-a-million’ safety record.

A spokesman said: “It is with great sadness that I can confirm that one worker has been killed and another seriously injured following an accident on site. Everybody on the site is shocked and saddened.”
