The world’s largest HR membership organisation has warned that practitioners are suffering from so much “low professional self-esteem” that it is hindering the occupation’s growth.
A survey of more than 4,000 HR professionals worldwide by the US-based Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), shows that many believe they are not regarded as business partners by senior managers.
More than half said that HR professionals were not held in high esteem and just under half said they do not have a significant level of autonomy and discretion in their job.

The findings are similar to those of a UK study on HR careers conducted by IRS at the end of 2004.
